Summary: DVD Player Died After 4 Months
Comment: Like the title says, yet another dead DVD-V9800 just after the warranty ended. All these one-star reviews weren't here when I got it. Looks like Samsung sent out a really bad batch of these things, with a really weak warranty to boot. WTF, Samsung?

Summary: Great Player at a Great Price!
Comment: I love this thing! A few months ago I moved and inherited a terrific new entertainment center. It looked great, but didn't have room for all of my then-current components. So, to save space I decided to toss out my VCR and DVD player, purchasing this single machine as their replacement. Now, I WAS skeptical: what kind of quality could I possibly get for ninety bucks? And, based on the other reviews there are a few buttons and whistles it doesn't have, but guess what? I don't need `em, and my guess is that most people don't. Having now owned this player for about three months, I can say that its performance has been flawless and it's done everything I've expected of it. If you're looking for high-end features, this ain't for you. If you want a machine that's relatively simple to operate and plays all your discs and video tapes, and comes to you at a bargain price, then this IS the one!

Summary: Gee, I don't remember this many 1-star ratings when I bought this thing
Comment: If a zero-star grade was available, I would have selected it. After reviewing the rest of the 1-star ratings, I have two thoughts:

1. Allow me to add my voice to the chorus of negative reviews on the Samsung DVD-V9800. It has gone completely non functional after only 4 months at most of very light duty as a DVD player. I don't think I ever used the VCR function other than the one time when I initially tested the unit after installing it. I received the unit in August or September and it sat in a box while I pulled the rest of my home theater together. Of course, now in December, the failure occurred after the 90 days parts and labor warranty has expired and now I am faced with the choice of paying for labor. Ironically, the diagnosis fee will probably exceed the unit's purchase price. I cannot fault Amazon for not being responsive because I didn't even open the box for 30 days or more. Lesson learned: Be patient and don't order stuff until you're really ready to test it and use it.

2. I simply do not remember the Samsung DVD-V9800 having this many negative ratings. I cannot imagine I would have bought anything with this many complaints against it. Anything will have some negative comments but in this case, the common theme of so many of the DVD-V9800's dying at a young age should be heeded by anyone considering one of these units. Lesson Learned #2: Pay attention to consumer level reviews

Oddly enough, when we bought the unit, it was on sale, and my better half really wanted to keep the capability of playing VHS tapes despite their obsolescence, so we bought two of them. At least I won't have to go far for a spare. Hopefully, it may last longer than its predecessor, perhaps even long enough to re-establish some of the admiration I had for Samsung.

To Samsung Management: Take these reviews with you on your next retreat, read them aloud amongst each other. Then ask yourselves if this where you really want to be, with this many consumers consistently criticizing one of your products. Either you will conclude that you are unhappy with the state of affairs . . . or you don't care.

Summary: stopped working after 5 months
Comment: Stopped working after 5 months . Out of nowhere it stopped playing DVD's.
Labor and shipping to fix the unit would be more than buying a new one. I am very dissapointed.

Summary: Burned with the "no tuner" - WATCH OUT !!
Comment: Purchased this for my parents, thinking this would be a nice replacement for their aging VCR. WRONG ! They have cable, and this stupid thing has NO TUNER. Now, I am in the unenviable position of giving a gift that I immediately must turn around and send back. Other reviews are right, there is nowhere on the description that says that this device is TUNERLESS. I think these descriptions need to be a little more transparent.

Editorial Reviews:

This versatile unit plays both DVD discs and VHS tapes, delivering crisp pictures and high-quality sound. Samsung's DVD-V9800 includes a 4-head Hi-Fi VCR with the added visual clarity of progressive scan output and allows MP3, JPEG and WMA playback.
